n.

  1. An expending, the using up of money; spending, time, etc. An expense.
  2. The amount of time and money that is consumed. Resources that are expended.

Expenditure tax. A tax which is levied on the total consumption expenditure of the individual and collected from the consumer. It may be a proportional or a progressive tax; its advantage is, the elimination of supposed adverse effect of the personal income tax on investment and saving incentives. It is difficult to administer and has been applied with only limited success in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and India.
